THEY poke fun at princes, pollies and personalities and for an extended three-week season the Bald Archys will have Coffs Harbour crowds chuckling at their irreverence.
Arriving this week from Canberra, the exhibition of 41 satirical works opens tomorrow night and remains on display at Coffs Harbour’s Bunker Cartoon Gallery until May 3.
Curator Louise Rawson-Harris said this year’s Bald Archys were rumoured to be “the best yet”.
“They’re brilliant,” Louise said. “Most people don’t realise that these are major paintings – they’re huge, just like the Archibald entries.”
Ms Rawson-Harris said Bald Archys entries were the work of many well-known artists with some famous cartoonists taking a trip into the fine arts to produce caricatures for the exhibition.
“They really are amazing paintings, with a satirical bent, of course,” Ms Rawson-Harris said.
Judged by a sulphur crested cockatoo named Maude, the winner of this year’s Bald Archy Prize was ‘The Official Portrait of the Danish Royal Family’ featuring Crown Princess Mary breastfeeding and Crown Prince Frederik, near naked.
“It’s a bit of fun,” Ms Rawson-Harris said. “You won’t be disappointed.”
Creative director of the Bald Archy Prize Peter Batey will be in Coffs Harbour for tomorrow’s opening, which starts at 6pm.
