Diggers platform a Tower of Strength

Diggers platform a Tower of Strength

07 May, 2009 10:45 AM
A NEW viewing deck is being constructed at Diggers Beach Reserve to provide a comfortable spot for the public to enjoy the coastal vista as well as an extra surveillance facility for Coffs Harbour City Council’s lifeguards during the summer.

The deck is being built as part of the Towers of Strength project with the generous support of Rotary Daybreak of Coffs Harbour and community donations, as well as the assistance of the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

“The Towers of Strength project is a true community initiative, with the ideas and support coming from Rotary Daybreak and very much helped along by the generosity of local people and businesses,” said Stephen Sawtell, Council’s General Manager.

“Council really appreciates the donations that enable this project to continue to proceed. The work and backing that Coffs Harbour Rotary Daybreak puts into this project is outstanding.

“It’s a great example of the community, Council and the State Government coming together to improve facilities for the public,” he said.

The new deck will replace the current viewing platform at the central beach walkway and will be a purpose-designed facility combining public viewing and seating with additional provision for Council’s Lifeguards during their patrols.

The original deck concept was prepared with the help of community representatives and was then refined further to meet the Coffs Coast Regional Park design standards.

It will be constructed of timber, with a Colorbond skillion roof and fibreglass decking. Plans are available to view on Council’s website at www.coffsharbour.nsw.gov.au

The walkway will be closed during weekdays and opened at each weekend. Construction is expected to take three weeks.
