Great day our for disabled surfers

Great day our for disabled surfers

19 Nov, 2009 08:07 AM
ANOTHER inspiring day of surfing was had by everyone at Woolgoolga main beach last Sunday when the Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) rolled into town.

After record numbers of surfers and volunteers descended on Woolgoolga last summer, a great turnout was expected.

A massive 24 participants came down to surf, including nearly a dozen first timers, which shows just how rapidly the Mid North Coast branch of the DSA is growing.

Sunday turned out to be another perfect day for the ‘hands-on’ surfing day.

A turnout of about 60 volunteers helped keep the surfers surfing, and although the number of helpers was down a little, there was still plenty of surf time for all concerned.

While there were too many surfers to talk about, special mention goes to stand-up Dave, Gabbi, Bree, Jordan and Kate, who not only surfed the house down, but kept the volunteers and surfers entertained all session.

With such large numbers of participants, the challenge was on to keep them entertained in between surfs.

The odd game of soccer and sandcastle building was OK, but nothing compared to the boat rides given to all the participants by the champions at the Woolgoolga VRO.

The participants, both young and old, were stoked to get out on the water in the VRO boat and have a trip around the beach.

For many, it was their first time in a boat and the smiles said it all – a big thank you goes out to the VRO crew from the DSA and some very happy surfers.

The Mid North Coast branch also wants to thank Mike Hely, manager community relations, Country Energy Far North Coast, for major assistance of $600 towards the purchase of UHF radios, and CEO of Key Employment at Coffs Harbour, Chris Worboys, for the very generous donation which will enable the branch to purchase another beach wheelchair.

Both items are invaluable to the DSA, and without such sponsorship the branch would struggle to manage.

The next event will be held on January 9 (Coffs Jetty Beach), followed by March 6 (Scotts Head).
