Greens Corps offers chance to learn new skills

09 Mar, 2010 08:03 AM
COFFS Coast people aged 17-24 years will have the opportunity to learn new skills when EnviTE begins the National Green Jobs Corps in the Mid North Coast region later this month.

The new program provides local young people with the opportunity to gain training and work experience in conservation and land management.

Through this federally funded program, which starts on March 22, EnviTE is offering training and work experience in the burgeoning industries of natural area management, bush regeneration, environmental restoration, light construction and landscaping.

“This program gives young people the opportunity to participate in community projects that gives them real skills, training and qualifications and work experience that employers are looking for but is often difficult, if not impossible for them to attain,” EnviTE coordinator Bill Sansom said.

In Coffs Harbour, participants will help Coffs City Council undertake light construction and paving at Bonville Headland and Landcare groups with bush regeneration and environmental restoration activities around the Coffs Harbour area.

The program is open to unemployed 17-24 year olds and is for a period of six months.

Nationally accredited training will be given with qualifications in First Aid, Certificate I in Conservation and Land Management and a Statement of Attainment at Certificate II level.

The training and experience that participants will receive will provide them with an advantage when seeking further employment and provides the ideal launching ramp for further employment and studies.

There is an information session in Coffs Harbour on Wednesday, March 17. Phone EnviTE’s Lismore office, 6621 9588, to find out more.

National Green Jobs Corps is federally funded through the Department of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations.
