IT came from left field, and was only accepted after heated discussion, but the baby dolphin at Coffs Harbour’s Pet Porpoise Pool finally has a name.
Three and a bit weeks after he was born, the son of Calamity and Bucky, has been named Jet.
The pool’s chief executive officer Paige Sinclair said the name was the result of a fair and democratic time-proven process.
“We started by getting staff to select their favourites from a list of around 150 suggested names put forward by readers of the Coffs Coast Independent, staff and visitors,” Paige said.
“After a series of elimination rounds it came down to two names, with Jet just edging out Beau as the name for the new baby.
“I’m not saying everyone is happy, but in a democracy the majority rules.”
Paige said Jet was short for jetty, and was a reference to both the youngster’s lightning speed around his pool and the timing of his birth in the dark of night.
The process to name Jet was filmed by cameraman Dean Cropp, who is capturing the activities at the pool for inclusion in a reality television series.
The efforts of Dean and producer Sally Browning have been given a boost by the Enterprise Training Company (ETC).
It has offered them $5000 towards the cost of producing the pilot episode which will be ‘shopped’ around to TV networks in mid-January.
ETC general manager Michael Close said the TV series had the potential to expose Coffs Harbour to a massive national and global audience, bring new tourists to the area and generate local jobs.
“We are very excited to be able to support this project,” Michael said.
