COFFS Harbour’s Angie Walter has been appointed NSW North Coast regional representative of Dragons Abreast Australia, an organisation which promotes breast cancer awareness and education, primarily through the sport of dragon boat racing.
“Our organisation has grown so much that it is important to ensure we maintain contact at the grass roots level,” said Dragons Abreast, founder Michelle Hanton, who was awarded an OAM in this years’ Queens Birthday honours list.
“Our regional representative is our face in the community.
“We chose Angie based on her professional manner and our belief in her ability to uphold the reputation that Dragons Abreast has gained over the last ten years.
“It is important that we ensure the sustainability of Dragons Abreast through empowering women, at all levels, to take on leadership roles with our organisation.”
Ms Walter officially takes up her position on Tuesday, July 1.
“I am excited and a little nervous, but honoured to take up this appointment,” she said.
“I will be attending a meeting in Bendigo on the weekend of July 4-6 July with other regional representatives and will learn more about my role.”
Dragons Abreast Australia, which offers an opportunity to get fit and have fun with those who have also travelled the journey with breast cancer, provides a beacon of hope and inspiration and personalises the breast cancer statistics.
As well as currently coordinating Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast, Ms Walter also co-facilitates the local young women’s support group The Young and the Breastless and is a wife, a mother to two teenage sons and practice manager for a Coffs Harbour surgeon.
“I am looking forward to working with everyone to ensure that the magic of Dragons Abreast remains strong,” Ms Walter said.
“I’m looking forward to the regional meeting to find out more about this new challenge.”
