New grants are sweet music for Coffs conservatorium

09 Mar, 2010 07:50 AM
COFFS Harbour Regional Conservatorium has received a $22,600 State Government grant for the commissioning and presentation of new works by composers Grant Collins and Paul Svoboda.

The work will be performed at the official opening of the conservatorium’s new building, scheduled for mid-2010.

Duty MLC for Coffs Harbour, Ian Macdonald, welcomed news from Minister for the Arts, Virginia Judge, that the conservatorium would share in $680,000 funding under a new State Government arts program.

“The conservatorium will deliver projects and performances that reflect the diversity and innovation Coffs Harbour audiences expect,” Mr Macdonald said.

“The region has a wealth of talented performers, and I am proud to be part of a Government which nurtures creativity across the state – not just in Sydney’s CBD.”

Ms Judge said the 2010 Regional Conservatoriums Arts Funding Program would fund a range of projects, including local performances, tours and workshops.

“This exciting new initiative is a boost for our regional conservatoriums, which are acknowledged as some of the best in Australia,” Ms Judge said.

“Increased community participation in arts and cultural activities is at the heart of the Keneally Government’s plan for the creative industries – and as Arts Minister I

will champion that goal.”

The Government is focused on:

• supporting arts organisations that directly engage with their local communities; and

• enabling practitioners and organisations to deliver world-class works and experiences to growing audiences across the state.
