FREE internet kiosks for seniors have been set up at the Cavanbah Centre in Coffs Harbour as part of the Federal Government’s Broadband for Seniors program.
“For most people, the internet is the easiest and most convenient way of keeping in touch with friends and family or accessing information and services,” said Councillor Denise Knight, chair of Coffs Harbour City Council’s city services committee.
“However, government statistics show that only one in five Australians over 65 currently use the internet – despite research which reveals that it helps break down the social isolation that some older people feel in this technological age.
“By providing internet access at a central community facility like the Cavanbah Centre we can help older members of the community stay in touch with their families, while at the same time helping them learn new skills and giving them a confidence boost in the use of this technology.”
Tutors will be on hand at the kiosk at the Cavanbah Centre to provide one-to-one tuition for seniors (any resident aged over 50).
Participants will learn how to operate a computer and the basic skills needed to use email, word processing and ‘surfing’ the internet.
The kiosk will be open Monday afternoons and all day Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the Cavanbah Centre in Harbour Drive.
Appointments are essential and can be made by phoning the Coffs Harbour Community Village Reception, 6648 3690.
