 TO THE RESCUE

TO THE RESCUE

02 Jul, 2009 09:53 AM
YOU can only imagine the terror of wading in waist-deep water and sewerage, with your newborn baby floating in a basket “like Moses in the rushes”.

It’s an image Nia Seiver and fiance Shane Heaney are unlikely to forget, thanks to the March 31 storm that lashed the Coffs Coast.

But Coffs Coast businesses have banded together to help ease the young family’s pain.

Thanks to Nia and Shane’s selection for a Storm Makeover Blitz, these memories will soon be joined by the excitement of fitting out their home with all that is beautiful and new from the generous sponsors.

Park Beach HomeBase organised the Storm Makeover Blitz, with the assistance of the Coffs Coast Independent, Radio 2CS and NBN Television. And along with a multitude of local businesses, the coming weeks will be a giant shopping expedition for Nia and Shane.

While the judging panel struggled with selecting one recipient among 25 very deserving nominations, ultimately Nia and Shane were selected.

“The Park Beach HomeBase Storm Makeover Blitz can really make a difference to Shane, Nia and (baby) Scarlet’s lives and we would like to help get them back in their home as soon as possible,” the selection panel said.

Nia and Shane’s loss of two cars, all house contents and damage to the house structure occurred when they had just completed a major renovation of their first home. They also had just welcomed their first child into the world.

When Nia took the phone call from Renae and Hendo live on 2CS Radio on Wednesday, there was a quiver in her voice.

“Oh, my goodness, I was in shock,” said Nia, who was nominated by her brother-in-law to be Mark Heaney, who has taken the young family into his home while Nia and Shane’s home has been rebuilt.

In his nomination, Mark described the couple as “really upbeat and positive about the experience,” despite the difficulty adjusting to a new baby and no home.

He described the couple as, “unselfish”. “They haven’t asked for anything, or any help, and probably never would,” Mark said.

According to Mark, Nia and Shane’s home, “looked like a disaster site. Furniture had been crashing into walls, floors wrecked and mud caked everywhere”.

When considering what the Storm Makeover Blitz will mean to them, Nia said: “Scarlet’s nursery was all set up and nicely done. It would be really special to see her nursery fixed up, particularly as we’re all in one room at the moment.”
