WOOLGOOLGA ATHLETIC CLUB

Seven athletes from Woolgoolga Athletic Club made the most of a trip to the NSW Country Track and Field titles in Newcastle last weekend with four returning with medals and all of them with personal best performances.

For all the Woolgoolga athletes it was their first experience of competition at NSW Country level.

Gold medals were secured by the club's newest member, Geoff McCann, and by middle distance stand-out Maddie Sadler.

McCann won the 40-49 age group 5000 metres in 17.38.28 while Sadler got her gold in the 16 years 800 metres with a massive personal best of 2.34.43. McCann also scored a silver medal in the 1500 metres (4.44.6.) and Sadler went two better than that with three silver medals, the triple jump, the 3000 metres walk and the 1500 metres, all the track races being personal best efforts.

Also collecting a total of four medals (two silvers, two bronze) was 30-39 age grouper, Rodney Watson.

Not to be completely outshone by her family members Maddie's mum, Kellie Watson who also gained a silver medal.

But the fun didn't stop there for the Club, with the 'Bunch of Fives' final (race five) run last Friday.

Richard Pearson and Tenielle Stubbs defended their Bunch of Fives titles in fine style in the final race of the series. Pearson scored a slashing victory to make it five wins for the five races while Stubbs gutsed out a third place to hold off her nearest challenger, race five winner Britney McMullen.

Pearson recorded an impressive 16.30, followed by Abbotts in second (16.57) and Matthew Berrington in third, placing him as runner-up for the series.

Leading the ladies in was Britney McMullen in 18.39, followed by Karlie Swanson (19.02), and Tenielle Stubbs in third (19.55).

Series results were: men ? 1st Richard Pearson, 2nd Matthew Berrington and 3rd Daniel Campbell. Over 40s winner Paul Sheringham, and Over 60s winner Dave Moffatt.

For the women: 1st Tenielle Stubbs, 2nd Britney McMullen and 3rd Karlie Swanson. The Over 50 winner was Janie Mahoney.
