RICHARD Pearson repeated last year’s victory in the 5km Seaside Scamper on Sunday, and in the process took a massive 43 seconds off his 2009 time.
If that was not enough, this year he had won a hotly contested 11.2km Forest Footrace on Saturday afternoon.
His winning margin was almost a minute on Sunday, but only 10 seconds on Saturday.
Former winner Paul Woodhouse from Dorrigo had pressed the pace in the Footrace, but was unable to shake his younger rival, with Pearson charging to the finish in 42.33 minutes.
Both were well clear of third-placed Kevin Duncan from Yamba, who crossed in 47.22mins, although Duncan was backing up after filling the third spot in the Water World Great Ocean Run over 45km the week before.
Runner-up in the Scamper for the second year was Coffs Harbour triathlete Cris Robb, who only just edged out up-and-coming Matthew Berrington, both finishing in 18.17mins.
The women’s race in the Footrace was another exciting finish, with Kim Batty holding out Leah Fitzgerald by two seconds to record 53.57mins. Third spot went to the remarkable Lyn Fulton in 57.19mins.
Melissa Bulloch recorded one of the fastest ever Seaside Scamper times for a woman to take this race for the second time with an 18.45mins clocking for sixth place outright.
Only previous winners Mandy Dovey and Narelle McKean have run faster.
Second went the 12-year-old early leader Tenielle Stubbs in 19.55mins, with another youngster Zoe Burgess 30secs adrift in third.
The Beach Bash runners had it much tougher this year with a higher tide and seaweed to contend with.
Nevertheless, Daniel Campbell made it look like a stroll on the sand, winning in 8.01mins, 16secs ahead of Josh Guy. Gary Barton rounded out a busy weekend to fill third in 8.35mins.
Romany Seeman was fourth to finish to claim the female title in 8.43mins, denying runner-up Phoebe O’Meara a second title by 26secs. Madizon O’Malley was third a further 30sec later.
The organisers were well-pleased with the turnout on both days, with numbers up on the previous two years.
Thirty eight finished the Footrace, 83 the Scamper, 43 the Beach Bash and 18 the Tiny Tot Trot.
They were also grateful for the generous local sponsorship and those volunteers who made the runs possible.
