CENTRAL Coast runner Stephen Sayers will return to defend his title in the Poolside Water World Great Ocean Run from Red Rock to Coffs Jetty on Sunday, March 21.
Sayers will line-up alongside another former winner, Armidale’s Michael Smart, in the Woolgoolga Running and Triathlon Society’s annual run along beaches, across creeks and over headlands.
Prodigious ultra marathoner Kelvin Marshall combined a run in last weekend’s Six Foot Track (45km) with dropping his entry in on his way home to the Gold Coast.
Another Queenslander Peter Mackenzie will be back for the 15th time, while well-travelled Victorian Peter Gray has signaled his intention to make the 45km Great Ocean Run Water World event his 200th ultra marathon and his 10th finish at Coffs Jetty.
While entries have been slow in arriving, the annual influx of Gold Coast, Southport and Tweed Heads runners is expected to swell the field closer to the day.
Although the official start time is 6am, some runners elect to start earlier, trading off better tidal conditions and poorer visability with cooler running and an earlier finish.
One such person is the ever enthusiastic former Gold Coast runner Beryl Kemp, who now lives at Nambucca.
Beryl has finished three previous Red Rock to Coffs Jetty events - one to celebrate her 70th birthday - and will be looking to become the event’s oldest finisher this year at age 79.
Entry forms can be picked up from the Poolside Water World shop in Orlando Street, Coffs Harbour, or downloaded from the AURA (Australian Ultra Runners Association) website at www.aura.asn.au/WaterWorld_RR2CH. html
Entries can be posted to Steel Beveridge at 3B Surf Street, Emerald Beach, or handed to him on Saturday, March 20 at Arrawarra Headland at 2pm, where a course survey will begin for those unfamiliar with the course. He should also be available at the Woolgoolga VSR Hall from 6pm for pre-race briefing.
