WOOLGOOLGA High School students produced outstanding results at the NSW All Schools’ track and field championships in Sydney recently.
Several students took part in the multi-events and track and field titles over two weekends.
Siblings Nicole and Jordan Gusman competed in the multi-events championships.
Jordan finished fourth with 3140 points for his seven events, his best score coming in the 1500m where he recorded 4 minutes 39.90 seconds to notch up 681 points.
His other events were the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot-put, 250m, long jump and javelin.
Nicole finished second with a score of 3471. Her best was her high jump where 1.57m scored 701 points.
Her other events were the 90m hurdles, shot-put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m.
She has another year in the under-16 years age group and was only just over 200 points behind the winner this time.
The full track and field program followed the multi-events weekend, with the Gusmans being joined by three members of the Macdonald family and Jacinta Smithers.
Nicole contested the three jumping events, with her best placing being a fourth in the high jump with 1.63m.
Her long jump of 4.71m was an improvement on the previous weekend and her triple jump of 10.47m placed her seventh in the final.
Jordan secured the bronze medal in the 800m with a 2 mins 04.19 secs time.
An impressive heat time in the 400m of 53.69 secs secured him a place in the final where he finished eighth.
Jacinta Smithers was Woolgoolga's other medalist, racing to the silver medal over the barriers in the 2000m steeplechase.
Her time of 8 ins 38.55 secs was impressive when you considering there are no steeplechase facilities on the North Coast.
Shannon McDonald also took aim at the Steeplechase, just missing the medals with a fourth placing.
His brothers Jesse and Shaun tackled the middle distance double in their age group, recording excellent times of 5 mins 10.37 secs and 5 mins 11.70 secs in the 1500m and 2 mins 29.22 secs and 2 mins 36.68 secs in the 800m.
The steeplechase and multi-events were both firsts for athletes from Woolgoolga High, so the Gusmans and Shannon and Jacinta are trail blazers.
Hopefully, other students will be inspired to contest these events in the future.
