North Coast juniors back on the park

30 Apr, 2010 09:22 AM
NORTH Coast Football C.ex Group Youth League squads are back in action this Sunday in round seven of the Northern NSW Youth League.

It has been two weeks since the boys’ teams were in action and over a month for the girls, so all players will be keen to get back into the orange and blue.

For the first time this year, NCF is at home in the competition having played the first six rounds away (five matches and one bye).

NCF is using the Woolgoolga High Street fields as its home turf this year, so this Sunday Woolgoolga will come alive as our best junior players welcome bus loads of players from Newcastle.

The Newcastle squads are generally regarded as the best in the competition, although the NCF teams are not prepared to concede that title to them just yet.

However, Newcastle does sit at the top of the ladder in all four competitions, so this weekend’s fixture, in which the first full cycle of the draw is complete, is very important – for bragging rights if for nothing else.

13-years boys

The big improvers this season are the 13 boys, no question about it. The youngest of the rep teams struggled in the early rounds of the Youth League but have most recently put in three solid performances in a row - a draw, a win and a draw.

This puts the NCF 13’s right amongst it in 5th spot & one point out of the four. The problem this weekend is NCF faces the no. 1 team by a mile. Newcastle has not even looked like being beaten this season. In fact they have not even conceded a goal in five matches (the only team in all four competitions to boast such a record), so there is a mountain to climb, but NCF is up for the challenge.

Kick off 11.30am.

14-years boys

NCF and Newcastle are the only two teams in the 14’s to remain undefeated after six rounds and nothing separates them on goal difference. NCF has only dropped points by being held to two draws while Newcastle has only had the one draw.

So just two points on the ladder between them and both undefeated makes this the match of the day on Sunday.

Coach Al Courtenay will be impressing upon his team at training this week the importance of possession with most matches at this level going in favour of the team who gets more than 50 per cent share of the ball.

Kick off at 1pm.

15-years boys

The Melbourne hangover has been lingering for the NCF 15’s with their two most recent outings resulting in losses. This has them in 3rd position & facing the league leaders Newcastle who have only lost once themselves.

However, it is a strange competition which has seen NCF beat Northern Inland, Northern Inland then beat Mid North Coast by seven goals, then Mid North Coast beat NCF.

It is time for the NCF 15s to reassert their authority on the competition and now would be a good time because Newcastle will be busting to reverse the result of the Manchester United Premiers Cup qualification match which sent NCF to Melbourne.

Kick off at 2.30pm.

16-years girls

NCF girls will be pleased to see the draw giving them back their preferred 10am kick off. Their last match was five weeks ago and in that one NCF kicked off last and suffered their only loss of the season to date.

Superstition aside, the girls have played better in cooler conditions and at Woolgoolga on Sunday the breeze will be minimal at that time of the day so there are no excuses.

Five weeks is a long time to be holding onto your only loss of the season so this match can’t come quickly enough. Newcastle is a well drilled side and is four from four after six rounds.

The strength of Newcastle is its defence - only three goals conceded in four games. The strength of NCF is its attack - 23 goals scored, nearly twice that of Newcastle, and only seven conceded (and five of those were in the last match).

It’s too close to call: the attack of NCF versus the defence of Newcastle. Kick off at 10am.

All matches at Woolgoolga High Street fields on Sunday, May 2.
