North Coast team eanrs spot in national finals

22 Mar, 2010 07:55 AM
NORTH Coast Football (NCF) C.ex Group Youth League 15 years boys' team is celebrating a famous 4-3 penalty shoot out win over Newcastle to become the Northern NSW representative team at the Australian finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup (MUPC).

NCF and Newcastle are the two top-ranked teams in the Youth League competition and met on a hot day in Taree on Saturday in a one-off match to decide who will carry the Northern NSW name to Melbourne next month.

The match was played in unseasonably warm conditions, but being 15 and fit, none of the players in either squad was going to take it easy, so the game was played at a furious pace.

NCF went behind early to a well-constructed Newcastle goal in the 15th minute, however, NCF restored parity just before the break through a set piece.

NCF was awarded a corner in the 30th minute which was taken expertly by Riley Dillon.

It flew flat to the far post where Jacob Hughes rose to meet it. ‘Hughesy’ pulled off an exquisite header, which found the back of the net.

The second half was hot and hard as the match grew into a midfield battle.

The NCF middle three of Kale Teece, Tom Gardiner and Jacob Hughes were outstanding. They ran for the ball all day, stole possession regularly and fed the forward line wherever possible, creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities.

Newcastle, however, is not easy to score against and battled hard throughout.

Newcastle nearly secured victory with just seconds on the clock remaining as a thunderbolt strike zeroed in on the net.

NCF’s man with the gloves, Tom Sherwood, then produced the save of the match with a diving outstretched right arm which tipped the ball over the bar.

Tom’s day was about to get even better.

The fulltime whistle went even before the corner could be taken and with no extra time being played under the rules of the day, it was straight to kicks from the penalty mark.

Newcastle kicked first and both teams successfully converted their first two attempts.

Then, at 2-2, Sherwood pulled off what turned out to be the only save of the penalty shootout. When NCF converted their third penalty, they were ahead 3-2 with only two shots remaining each.

Both teams put in their fourth making the score 4-3 to NCF going into the fifth and deciding kick, but when the fifth Newcastle kicker put his shot wide of the target, NCF had won the match without needing to take their fifth.

Coach Jeff Hughes described the scene which followed as amazing.

“It was just like the Socceroos, mate,” Jeff said after the match.

“The entire team ran to Tom Sherwood and congratulated him and then they all jumped around in a big huddle, just like you see on TV. It was an incredible day.”

NCF paid credit to its opposition on the day who could only be defeated on penalties after playing every bit as well as its North Coast counterparts for the previous 70 minutes.

However, the NCF C.ex Group 15s boys will fly the Northern NSW flag at the Australian finals of the MUPC in April.

The team must now get ready to pack their bags for the tournament, which is played in the April school holidays.

It is an all-expenses paid trip thanks to the tournament’s sponsor Nike, who is providing a similar benefit to over 20 countries. Quite an injection into the youth of the world’s favourite game.

The full squad is: Riley Dillon, Rees Duncan, Tom Gardiner, Adam Hancey, Jamie Hough, Jacob Huges, Patrice Jutzi, Jacob Leslie, Matthew Logan, Lachlan Moye, Nicholas O’Mullane, Tom Sherwood, Zac Smith, Mote Sonter, Kale Teece & Jerry Whish-Wilson. Coach: Jeff Hughes, Manager: John Hough.
