Quick turnaround for youth squads

12 Mar, 2010 09:59 AM
SOCCER: North Coast Football (NCF) Youth League squads have less than a week to recover from their trip to Lake Macquarie before they head off to Armidale for their round three clash with Northern Inland Football (NIF) this Saturday.

16 years girls

As usual the first match will be the 16 years girls, who kick-off at 10am.

The girls are coming off a crushing 6-1 victory away from home against Macquarie, which the other zones will have taken notice of.

Jasmin Courtenay bagged four goals and Jessica Gunning two as NCF cut up the Macquarie defence at will.

There are a few youngsters in the squad as well, proving that victory comes through the development of player ranks in all ages, not by simply by hanging on to older players.

Two of the players new to the team are still 12-years-old – Hope Eadie and Elizabeth Tonks, while three are still only 13 – Jesse Gentle, Gabrielle Bastick and Georgia Allen.

NIF suffered a heavy defeat two weeks ago to Macquarie, who then lost heavily to NCF, so on form NCF should have the game to win this one, but it would be unwise to take the opposition for granted.

13 years boys

It’s a developmental year for the NCF 13 boys and it has been a tough road so far, however, the squad has shown some recent improvement and despite losing last weekend, most of the goals were conceded in the first quarter of an hour with the rest of the match fairly even.

This team has showed it can compete for large stretches of each match, but now must turn that into a 100 per cent performance when the whistle blows for kick-off.

Macquarie narrowly beat NIF two weeks ago, so NCF will need to step up a gear to take this one, but that task seems within their reach.

14 years boys

On recent form, NCF will go into this match against NIF as favourites.

NCF accounted for Macquarie last week after Macquarie had a comfortable win over NIF the week before.

But football is a funny game so there will be no let up.

Al Courtenay has the squad playing a slick game at the moment and everything is working in attack.

Zack Smith, in particular, has been irresistible so far this year and the team boasts some of the best players of this age group in the entire zone such as Je Jacobs, Rees Duncan and Noah Bedford.

15 years boys

Last week this squad scored four goals and conceded none in a comprehensive display against Macquarie.

Macquarie easily accounted for NIF the week before, so unless a virus sweeps through the team on the bus heading to Armidale, NCF should be able to handle the trip.

That is always a worrying thought so early in the season.

After all, NIF may have had key players missing against Macquarie, but the 15 years boys have been in very good form and look to be continuing on from last year’s winning ways.
