THE RAAF Roulettes will be one of the highlights of this year’s Oztag National Championships in Coffs Harbour from November 13-15.
“There’ll be plenty of action on the fields during the championships, but we wanted to add an extra bit of excitement, so we’ve invited the Roulettes to do a fly-past,” said Bill Harrigan, tournament director and well-known former NRL referee.
“We also wanted to give the whole Coffs Harbour community a bit of a treat during our latest stay here as we’ve always found them incredibly welcoming to oztag.”
The national championships – the third to be held in Coffs Harbour - will be hosted at the BCU International Stadium from 5pm on Friday, November 13, and will run until Sunday, November 15. The Roulettes, the Royal Australian Air Force's elite formation aerobatic display team, will fly over the stadium at 12.15pm on Saturday, November 14.
About 3000 oztag players and supporters will take part in the 2009 championships, representing 83 teams from across Australia.
“We chose Coffs for the very first national championships - as well as the very first State of Origin series - as it’s such a great city for sporting events," Harrigan said.
"It’s easily accessible, has excellent accommodation choices for players, officials and supporters and we’ve developed a great working relationship with Coffs Harbour City Council.
"Plus we feel pretty privileged to play in such a great venue as the BCU International Stadium.”
Next year’s State of Origin series will also be hosted at the stadium in June 2010.
Coffs Harbour Mayor, Keith Rhoades, said Coffs Harbour had watched the growth of oztag since its beginnings.
“Every year, the sport attracts more and more players and fans," he said.
"Our loyalty to them has been rewarded by their continued return year after year to Coffs Harbour.
"I wish all the teams the best of luck in the championships in 2009 and look forward to welcoming them, once again, in 2010.”
Games for the national championships will begin on Friday, November 13, at 5pm until 8.30pm. On Saturday and Sunday they will start at 9am and end around 5pm each day. Entry is free and all are welcome.
