Ultimate Frisbee flies into Coffs

23 Apr, 2008 04:38 PM
THE Australian Ultimate Frisbee Championships will be held in Coffs Harbour, starting today.

The championships are the elite ultimate frisbee competition for Australia, and comprises the top 16 men’s and women’s teams in the country.

“Ultimate frisbee has to be the most inclusive game in the world,” Coffs Harbour Deputy Mayor, Rod McKelvey said.

“Anyone can play as long as they have a frisbee, marker cones and some willing friends.

“These championships will involve Australia’s top teams, but it’ll also be a fun event that I’m sure will inspire others to get involved.”

The championships will be held at Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park on Stadium Dr, with the main games to be played at the BCU International Stadium.

Entry to all games is free.

The games will be played today from 9am-5pm, tomorrow from 8.30am-5pm, Saturday from 8.30am-5pm and Sunday from 9am-2.45pm (men’s final at 11am, women’s final at 1pm)

The community is invited to come along to watch the inaugural Anzac Day Test match between the Australian and New Zealand women’s teams at the BCU International Stadium tomorrow from 5.45pm.

Ultimate frisbee is a non-contact team sport played with a frisbee.

It combines elements of netball, touch football and gridiron.

It is unique in that the sport is self-refereed, and due to the spirit of the game, players are responsible for adhering to, and overseeing, the rules.

During a game, the basic aim is for the team with the frisbee to pass it up the field to others on their team and complete a pass into the end zone. At the same time, the defensive team is trying to intercept the frisbee, or to knock it down. If they succeed, they get possession of the frisbee and then try to score in the other end zone.

Ultimate Frisbee is played on a grass field, narrower than a football (soccer) field. Teams play with seven players, and are allowed substitutes.

The sport places the responsibility for fair play on every player. Players on the field make their own calls when violations occur. If there is a disagreement, the frisbee returns to the players who made the last pass and the game resumes.
