PROMISING young golfer Jack Pountney has again made the NSW primary schools’ team after finishing runner-up at the state championship played at Mudgee last week.
The Year 5 St Augustine’s Primary School student fired rounds of 83 and 78 to fall just one shot short of claiming the overall title.
His silver medal-winning performance was enough to earn selection in the 12-member (eight boys, four girls) NSW team for the week-long Australian championships to be held at the Rosebud golf course in Victoria in November.
It’s the second time Jack has made the state team.
Four other Coffs Coast students contested the NSW championships at Mudgee.
Coffs Harbour Christian Community’s Josh Burrow was 12th overall, while Sawtell Zach Ion, Urunga’s Jack Hickey and Coffs Harbour Christian Community’s Jake Burrow also performed well.

Reigning North Coast Open champion Grant Skinner holds a handy four-shot lead after the opening round of the Woolgoolga RSL Golf Club championships on Saturday.
Skinner fired a par 72, but it could have been much better after turning three under.
Fellow club member Don Penson, who shot an opening 78, thought Skinner was on target to shoot eight under after nine holes.
“That course was set up pretty hard on Saturday,” Penson said. “With our course, the front nine’s really tight and short and if you can get around on handicap you’re laughing, on the back nine you can go deep.
“We thought he (Skinner) was going to go six, seven, eight deep, but ended up shooting three over (on the back nine).”
Logan Toms and Gary Bolton share equal second place on 76, two in advance of Aaron Hart and Penson.
The second round will be played this Saturday, with the final two rounds on the weekend of September 26-27.
From the final two rounds, the best eight scores will qualify to contest the match play version of the championships.

South West Rocks junior Jamie Hook proved too consistent for allcomers at the regional championships played at Gunnedah recently.
The teenager spearheaded the Mid North Coast junior team to an emphatic victory, but it was his individual performance that impressed most.
He fired rounds of 70 and 69 on the testing par 70 Gunnedah layout to not only take the junior individual honours, but also the senior title as well.
Overnight leader Luke Streater, of Gunnedah, looked set for victory when he got to three under with just eight holes to play, but he dropped six shots on the run home to finish two behind Hook.
Streater had some consolation with his Central North team winning the championship by a comfortable 15 shots from the Mid North Coast.
