Reigning champion leads Sydney assault

02 Jul, 2009 11:16 AM
REIGNING champion Steve Glasson leads an all-out St Johns Park assault on this year’s Park Beach Ford Open singles bowls tournament, starting on July 13.

Glasson will be joined in the elite 40-player field by clubmates Sharyn Renshaw, current Australian women’s representative, and Matthew Pietersen, current NSW player.

Adding weight to the West Sydney club’s bid for glory on the Park Beach Bowling Club greens is past winner Brent Norman.

But the St Johns Park quartet won’t have things all its own way, especially if Park Beach bowler and last year’s runner-up Corey Daley has a say.

Daley is coming off a stellar 12 months that has seen him win the NSW championship and named the state’s most improved bowler.

The Park Beach club has a strong hand in this year’s tournament, with John Bain, Col Pritchard, Josh McMaster and Denzil Owen lining up alongside Daley.

A host of national and state representatives will do battle with an international contingent led by South Africa’s most capped player Neil Burkett and long-time New Zealand representative Rowan Brassey.

Fellow Kiwi Mark Cowan and Canadian Commonwealth Games representative Ryan Bester are also in the line-up.

Another former winner Sam Laguzza, of Swansea, is back for another tilt at the title, while ACT under-25 years women’s representative Janet Hesenski heads a host of young guns, including West Coffs’ Ben Watson and Greenslopes’ Ben Twist.

Other players capable of pressing for major honours are Engadine’s Shane Garvey, a NSW representative, Taren Point’s Wayne Turley, a Commonwealth Games gold medalist and who was this week named in the Australian team for the Asia Pacific Championships in Kuala Lumpur, and Lakes Entrance legend John Snell.

Players have been divided into 10 sections of four to play preliminary games on July 13, 14 and 15. The 30 section winners plus the next two best performed players from the sectional rounds advance to an eight-section round-robin format on July 16.

The eight section winners then progress to the quarter finals on July 17, with the semi-finalists and finalists to be determined in the knockout stage.

The overall tournament winner will drive away in a Ford Fiesta, while the runner-up pockets $4000. Losing semi-finalists receive $1500 and quarter-finalists $750.

Games start each day at 9am. The final is schedule for Friday, July 17 at 3.30pm.
