 Juniors look good for tri-series

Juniors look good for tri-series

25 Mar, 2010 09:50 AM
WELL done to all players selected in the Group 2 under-18s representative team, and to the Woolgoolga club who dominated with five players.

The team travels to Scully Park, Tamworth, to take on Groups 3 and 4, hoping to dominate the tri-series and win selection in the Oxley Pioneers, who are attempting their third straight grand final appearance in the NSW Country championship.

We have a big pack for halves Tyler Doolan and Steve Goodwin to guide around.

I feel confident this side will emulate the previous years.

1. Jamie Preston (Port Macquarie)

2. Michael Curnow (Woolgoolga)

3. Tom Sheeves (Port Macquarie)

4. Jayden Austen (Nambucca)

5. Mitchell Dockery (Woolgoolga)

6. Steve Goodwin (Woolgoolga)

7. Tyler Doolan ( Macksville)

8. John Graham ( Orara)

9. Ben Law (Orara)

10. Pat Sneesby (Nambucca)

11. Kayden Gleeson (Woolgoolga)

12. Vaughn Babbini (Bellingen)

13. Kristian Kelly (Port Macquarie)

14. Marshall Wall (Woolgoolga)

15. Chris Dickenson (Sawtell)

16. Ryan Nottley (Macleay)

17. Kemp London (Macleay)

Comets, Seahorses impress

Coffs Harbour Comets showed their supporters against Bellingen last weekend that new players will lift their side this year.

Great to see the Ben McCarthy and Matt Donovan combination back together.

Hard-working Des Teal and utility back Tyler Corfe will be great value.

Comets outplayed Bellingen 38-12, although the Magpies never showed their full playing list.

Woolgoolga Seahorses surprised the Orara Axemen 50-18 in a promising effort.

New Seahorses, prop Sammy Van Hammond, Kelsie Davis, Scott Street and Adam Clarke, all stood out, which pleased new coach Steve Gooley.

Nambucca Heads also proved it will be more than competitive in 2010, holding Sawtell until the last 10 minutes.

The Roosters will get better after their first hit out together.

Port Macquarie Sharks and Macksville Sea Eagles played out a tough 18-all draw.

Trials are not everyone’s preferred game, but I am sure the players appreciated their first hit out and once the soreness goes can’t wait to play again.

Port Sharks will rely on local and junior talent under Tony Pascoe in 2010, and the southerners can’t be taken lightly.

They still hope to entice two forwards and a centre from Sydney once their work commitments finish in April.

Macleay Valley have been boosted by the return of top junior and front rower Sam Howe, who is back on home soil from Tweed Heads after three seasons away.

Group trials this weekend before the Easter break, and then the start of the season proper.

Sunday’s Comets-Woolgoolga match should be worth watching at Woolgoolga.

Group 2 pre-season games this weekend:

Bellingen v Sawtell (Saturday)

Woolgoolga v Coffs Harbour

(Sunday)

Port Macquarie v Macleay Valley (Sunday)

Nambucca Heads v Orara Valley (Saturday)

Bye: Macksville

NRL update

After two rounds only the Roosters, Dragons, Storm and Titans remain undefeated.

It seems you have to be 20 points behind before you start playing, a trend that’s crept into our game.

And how many referees, touch judges and video refs do we need to get it right, with bad decisions costing some teams in three games.

The referees certainly don’t notice the boot not touching the ball in the play-the-ball area.

Great to see Roosters and former Raider centre Phil Graham in top form after years of injuries, and former Mackay forward Aiden Guerva, after waiting for five years at the Storm to get a start, outstanding for the Roosters.

Former Orara Valley player Ryan Walker is knocking on the door for a first grade spot at Penrith.

Tomorrow night, the Tigers face another test with only five days rest when they take on arch rivals the Eels. The clash between Lote Tuqiri and Timana Tahu should be a beauty.

Draw for this weekend (my tips in capital letters – there were production problems with my tips last week):

Friday: Tigers v EELS, DRAGONS v Cowboys.

Saturday: PANTHERS v Storm, SEA EAGLES v Knights, TITANS v Raiders.

Sunday: BRONCOS v Warriors, Bulldogs v ROOSTERS.

Monday: Sharks v RABBITOHS.
