Third Australian found dead in Laos

09 Feb, 2012 07:51 AM
A Victorian man has been found dead in a Laos hotel room.

The 22-year-old, who was in Luang Prabang when he died, is the third Australian tourist to die in the south-east Asian country in the past month.

His body was found with the body of a woman, believed to be from the Netherlands, a spokesman for the Luang Prabang tourism department said.

The pair had been in the room for four days before they were discovered by police, the spokesman said.

Local police were still investigating, he said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade last night confirmed the man's body had been found but would not reveal the cause of death.

DFAT were made aware of his death by authorities in Laos on Tuesday and the man's family have been notified.

"Consular staff in Australia are providing assistance to the man's family," a DFAT spokesperson said.

Two other Australians have died in tubing accidents in Laos' popular Vang Vieng in the past month.

Sydneysider Lee Hudswell, 26, died after leaping from a tower on January 10, while Melbourne man

Daniel Eimutis, 19, was found dead in a river on January 26, three days after he disappeared while tubing.
